Bio

Angeles Portilla is a Mexican artist born in Mexico City, 2001.  Being exposed to a culture that glorifies art and violence from an early age, she developed a deep attachment to both. She is described as an artist who “takes herself to her emotional and physical limits for her work”. Portilla embodies aggressive and raw themes, always with a feminist approach, showing a direct criticism towards social problems that range from the abuse of her body to generational trauma, two issues Portilla has personally grappled. One of the main things that Portilla seeks with her work is to overstep her boundaries with endurance, physicality and her relationship with the viewers. Her main mediums are performance, video and self portraiture photography.  To a large extent, her processes are based on observation and experimentation, with a constant influence from artists such as Mike Kelley, Adrian Piper and Cindy Sherman. She has also taken a liking towards silkscreen printmaking, with and emphasis on graphic design and the use of CMYK. She is currently enrolled at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and is expected to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2023.
